Water quality of San Pedro Creek watershed, Pacifica, California

Abstract

 

This study examines the water quality of San Pedro Creek, Pacifica, CA.  A routine water monitoring program examined several physical, chemical and biological parameters at San Pedro Creek.  Overall, San Pedro Creek water quality met most of the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB), EPA and literature standards for non-contact water recreation and provides a significant habitat for aquatic species yet the creek has a critical level of bacteriological contamination when its actual use for water contact recreation is examined.  Inputs from sewage and storm systems may be the main source of bacteriological contamination.  The findings of this study require an immediate management intervention to mitigate and solve the pollution problem affecting San Pedro Creek.  Further studies should concentrate in technologies that help to pinpoint the sources of pollution affecting the creek.
