Students pursuing a degree in Earth Science or Geosciences who wish to be considered for Earth & Climate Sciences (ECS) scholarships must complete the following by Feburary 10th:
- Submit an application through the CSU Apply for admission to SF State. If you are admitted to the program (either B.S. or M.S.), then you are eligible to submit a separate application for scholarships.
- Submit a scholarship application by February 10th through SF State Academic Works. Enter into the Search bar the names of ECS Fellowships, such as "Dempsey", "Monteverdi", "Grove", "Pestrong" in addition to searching through scholarships offered through CoSE (College of Science and Engineering).
Some of the scholarships available on the SF State Academic Works application portal include but are not limited to:
- The Jon S Galehouse Scholarship in Earth Sciences for undergraduates
- The Professor Emeritus Dave Dempsey and Rebecca Douglass Scholarship in Earth and Climate Sciences
- The Monteverdi Fellowship for graduate students
- Grove/Ach Fellowship for graduate students
The criteria for each of these awards are unique and you should read each carefully to make sure that you qualify to apply.

The David E. Johnson Memorial Scholarship (pdf)
The David E. Johnson Memorial Scholarship in Geography & Environment honors David Johnson, a 1986 graduate of the department who worked as a transportation and environmental planner. Apply each spring at Academic Works. (You must meet enrollment requirements in the following fall semester to receive an award.)
The Pease Memorial Award is a scholarship conferred annually by the School of the Environment, and established by the family of Steven Pease, who taught climatology and remote sensing from 1975 to 1984, when he died of an allergic reaction to a malaria prevention drug. Apply each spring at Academic Works. (You must meet enrollment requirements in the following fall semester to receive an award.)
R. Christopher McGee Scholarship
This award is granted annually to support students in the field of geography and the environment. The award amount is $3000 and one award (to an undergraduate or graduate student) will be granted. Apply each spring at Academic Works. (You must meet enrollment requirements in the following fall semester to receive an award.)
The Vance Award
The Jean Vance Award provides up to $500 of funding available to graduate students to help manage the costs of research and traveling. Apply fall or spring at Academic Works.
George Feliz taught Economics at SF State from 1946 to 1975 and served as the first dean of Graduate Studies on this campus. He established an endowment to award a scholarship to an Environmental Studies major who could demonstrate financial need. The amount of the award varies, but is usually between $700 and $1000.
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- You must be an Environmental Studies major.
- You must have completed freshman year.
- You must have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all SFSU courses.
- You must have completed at least two courses in the ENVS major.
- You must be enrolled at least half-time during the current academic year.
In addition to the minimum criteria, students must demonstrate financial need (supplemental question in the Academic Works application form), and preference is given to students who are single parents. Being a single parent is a Feliz Scholarship selection preference, but you do not have to be a single parent to be eligible. Therefore, all students meeting the minimum criteria and having financial need are encouraged to apply. Learn more about the scholarship.

Graduate and undergraduate student research grants opportunities:
Each Fall the Earth & Climate Science grants committee welcomes applications for:
- Pestrong Geoscience Research Grants are to support student research in any area of the Geosciences, including geology, meteorology, oceanography and earth science education. The Pestrong fund was created by the generous donations of Professor Ray Pestrong.
- Dawdy Hydrology Research Grants are to support student research in any aspect of the hydrologic sciences, including all the disciplines encompassed by the Hydrology Section of the American Geophysical Union. The Dawdy fund was created by the generous donations of Doris and David Dawdy.
- Community Service Grants are to support student involvement in community service activities, particularly where students are contributing their skills and expertise in earth science to help solve environmental and social justice problems. Community service grants are supported by both the Pestrong and Dawdy funds.
- Atmospheric Sciences Education and Research Grants (ASERG) are to support student education, research and community service in meteorology. ASERG grants are funded by the generous donations of several anonymous donors.
Eligibility for student research grants:
Undergraduate students who are majoring or minoring in Geology, Meteorology, Oceanography or Earth Science, and graduate students working toward a MS in Geosciences are eligible to apply for an award. Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in individual research courses numbered 697, 698, 699, 897, 898, or 899. All applicants must have a School of the Environment faculty research advisor or sponsor.
Award Uses:
Students may use awards only to fund costs involved with completing their research or community service projects. They may not use awards to cover other academic costs. Examples of appropriate uses for the awards include: purchasing field or laboratory supplies such as maps and aerial photographs, sample bags, chemicals or equipment; field work expenses including transportation, subsistence, permits and insurance; professional laboratory analyses; travel and registration costs associated with participation in conferences; printing expenses to reproduce written reports, or page charges for publishing papers in journals; specialized computer software, etc. Equipment and software will be the property of San Francisco State University and must be left as permanent additions to the School of the Environment's laboratories.
Award Amounts:
Pestrong and Dawdy Grants: Undergraduate students may apply for funds up to a maximum of $400; graduate students may request up to $800.
ASERG Grants: Undergraduate and graduate students may apply for grants ranging from $100 to a maximum of $500.
Depending on the number of applicants and quality of proposals in any given semester, it may not be possible to provide these maximum amounts to any single applicant.
